Arunachal is a remotest and loveliest state located southeast part of India. It is the state of least population in south region of India. Festivals are an essential ingredient of the state Arunachal and the socio-traditional life of the various tribes of this state. Such type of festivals of various tribes celebrated on a large scale through out the state. These festivals are a way of praying their deities for bumper crop, peace and prosperity among the people. Dances and music of this state is also an essential part of the people of this state.
Folk forms of dances and folk music is the path of explanation of their ritual and religious feelings towards their deities and lords. These people from various tribes are dances on their ritual festivals and recreational occasions. Aji Lhamu Dance is a form of dance of a ritual tribe ‘Monpa’ of Arunachal Pradesh. Monpa tribe is a primitive community which belongs to West Kameng district and Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh. Monpa tribe believed in the religious of Buddhist. Aji Lhamu Dance is one of the most prominent dance forms of Mompa community.
Aji Lhamu Dance is a Tibetan version of the great Hindu epic ‘Ramayana’. This is a dance drama which has five characters which all has a mythological origin. They are named as ‘Nyapa’, ‘Gyeli’, ‘Nyaro’, and two female characters ‘Lhum’ and ‘Lhamu’. The character Lhamu represents a fairy that come from the heaven and become later the queen of Gyeli who is the king. This dance performance held in a festival of monpa community which known as the LOSSAR festival. It is the celebration of New Year among the people of this community.
