Bhavai Dance of Gujarat

Gujarat is the land of festivals and those festivals can not be completed without folk culture and traditions. Folk dances of Gujarat are world famous and one of them is Bhavai dance. It is the folk drama of this state which performed on a stage. The word Bhavai made from an ethnic Sanskrit word Bhava means expression of feelings. In ancient time of this state a Brahmin Kathakara named ‘Asaita Thaker’ developed this folk drama. He used this folk talent as a narration of folk tales of epics.

It is a folk drama in which just male dancer can perform because Bhavai is strictly restricted for women to participate. All of female charactors of a story played by the male participators with women cloths wearing. The stage for this performance of Bhavai decorated at the place of open-air and in front of temple of goddess Amba. One of the all players of drama led them and gives them direction to react as like characters of the tale of epic. He sung ritual songs also during the performance for religious purpose and narrates the story.

Bhavai folk dance is now days also uses as an entertainment drama of people through out Gujarat especially it is too popular in rural areas of this state. There is a magical and melodious video of a Bhavai dance performance in Gujarat as follows.
