Devaraattam Folk Dance of Tamil Nadu:
Devaraattam is a very ancient folk art of Tamil Nadu. Devaraattam folk dance is one of the pure fork arts which is perform by a single tribe of Tamil Nadu. Veerapandiya Kattabomman is a tribe which follows this beautiful folk art of Tamil Nadu. In the state this melodious and gorgeous folk dance very famous at Kodangipatti of Madurai District. Veerapandiya Kattabomman people in this district perform Devaraattam folk dance once in a year on religious occasion. They perform this folk art in front of their deity. During ritual ceremonies we can watch this Devaraattam dance in temple place.
During current time there is no tradition to sing songs with dancing performance of Devaraattam. Dancers moves their body according to beautiful rhythm of beating a musical instrument ‘Urumi’ and ‘Thapu’. Sometime they use a long flute for melodious music for dance performance. All of the dancers adorned themselves with beautiful and colorful traditional cloths. They hold a kerchief in both of hands. Dancers moves with swinging of that Kerchief in air. One of all dancers led the team as a leader of chorus. All of dancers follow steps of leader. Leader wears a mask on his mouth which looks so beautiful.
