Folk music of Kerala revolves around dance, vocal music and instrumental music. Instrumental music is a fabulous form of music. It is also known as ‘Vadhya Sangeet’. ‘Vadhya Sangeet’ or instrumental music consist various musical instrument to play musical songs or dance. Instrumental music consist wind instruments, string instruments and percussion instruments. Sarangi, Vina, Swarabi, Violin and Tamburu are famous string musical instrument of Kerala. Percussion instrument of Kerala includes Dolak, Edakka, Chenda, Mridangam, Mizhavu, Takil, Timila and Udukku. Kuzhal, Nadaswaram, Kombu and Mughavina are famous wind musical instruments of Kerala.

During various temple ceremonies or festivals instrumental music plays a major role. ‘Thayampaka’ is a famous and well known musical ‘Vadhya’ of Kerala. It plays during various temple folk arts. As like thayampaka there is another popular temple musical instrument in Kerala named ‘Chendamelam’. Chenda Melam, Tayambaka, Panchavadyam and Nagaswaramelam are famous folk art of Kerala which based on instrument music. During performance of that art various musical instruments play.
